About A Doctor's Appointment

We suffer from firstborn idolization syndrome. We like to talk about our first and only child. A lot. In fact, the only thing more wonderful than telling everyone we know all about her latest escapades, is actually hearing someone else brag about her. Like her doctor...who, until today, had never gotten an 18-month-old to open her mouth, and stick out her tongue for an examination. Who did not try to conceal her shock when my answer to, "Is she holding a fork and spoon?" was, "yes, she feeds herself actually. Everything. Oatmeal, applesauce, and even yogurt by herself. With utensils." Whose jaw actually dropped when, "Is she saying four words?" returned, "Four word sentences."

Then you should have seen the doctor when Bella started to demonstrate some of her fine verbal skills. Comedy! She practically gushed about how amazing Bella's speech is. She said she wanted to put our child in her pocket and take her home. All I had to say to all of that was, "She IS extremely fun to talk to!" What I wanted to say is, "I KNOW! I have no idea why or how she is like this!?" Because let's face it, the play-by-plays with which I have bored our daughter since day one of her life are certainly not responsible for all this early talking. Nor can we credit her largely organic eating habits for presumably lowered concentrations of toxins in her system. It just doesn't work that way. I take zero credit. I am as baffled and pleased as the next person. Well maybe a little more pleased than the next person, but certainly just as baffled.

Mostly, I am just thankful that she checks out so great each visit. Thank you God that we don't have any health or developmental worries with Bella! This is one of the many rich blessings I wish to be more keenly aware of as I seek an attitude of thankfulness and humility. So, with a humble heart, I give God all the credit for such an amazing little sprite of a daughter! Because seriously, this is all Him.
